Chiller Van vs Refrigerated Truck: Which One Does Your Business Need?
Most refrigerated deliveries in the UAE run on one of two vehicles: a 1–3 ton chiller van or a 3–5 ton refrigerated truck. Pick one that is too small and you pay for extra trips. Pick one that is too big and you pay for space you don’t use, and fight tight streets and loading bays every day.
This guide puts the two side by side — load size, temperatures, access and real AED price ranges — so you can match the vehicle to your routes. For a ton-by-ton breakdown, see our refrigerated vehicle size guide.
Quick answer
- Choose a chiller van (1–3 ton) for city deliveries, many small drops, tight access and moderate daily loads.
- Choose a refrigerated truck (3–5 ton) for bulk and wholesale loads, fewer but bigger drops, and full loads moved between emirates.
- Both come chilled (0°C to +8°C) or frozen (−18°C to −25°C), with driver or self-drive, on daily, weekly or monthly plans.
Chiller Van vs Refrigerated Truck at a Glance
The biggest differences are load size, access and daily cost; temperatures and driver options are the same for both.
| Chiller van | Refrigerated truck | |
|---|---|---|
| Load capacity | 1–3 ton | 3–5 ton |
| Temperature | Chiller 0°C to +8°C or freezer −18°C to −25°C | Chiller 0°C to +8°C or freezer −18°C to −25°C |
| Body options | Standard or high roof for tall cargo | Chiller truck or freezer truck |
| Best for | Restaurants, cafes, caterers, retail top-ups, multi-drop city routes | Distributors, wholesalers, supermarket replenishment, bulk frozen stock |
| City access | Easier in narrow streets, car parks and small loading bays | Needs more room to park, turn and unload |
| Daily rate | AED 250–400 | AED 500–650 |
| Weekly rate | AED 1,300–1,500 | Custom quote |
| Monthly rate | AED 3,000–4,000 | AED 6,500–8,500 |
| Driver | With driver or self-drive | With driver or self-drive |
Prices are indicative ranges. Your exact price depends on vehicle size, rental period and routes — see our rental cost guide for what moves the number.
When a Chiller Van Is the Right Choice
A chiller van wins when your loads are moderate and your stops are many. Choose a van if most of these are true:
- Your load fits within 1–3 tons. Single-site restaurant, cafe and catering runs usually do.
- You make many small drops a day. A van parks, unloads and moves on quickly between stops.
- Your stops have tight access — narrow streets, mall service roads, building car parks. For a high roof van, check the height clearance of any basement first.
- Your cargo is tall rather than heavy, like cake stands, trolleys or racks. A high roof van gives the height without moving up to a truck.
- You want a lower daily cost. Vans start from AED 250 a day.
Vans come chilled or frozen. A chiller van holds 0°C to +8°C for fresh food, dairy and drinks; a freezer van holds −18°C to −25°C for ice cream and frozen stock. Not sure which temperature you need? Read chiller van vs freezer van. In the capital, see chiller van rental in Abu Dhabi.
When You Need a Refrigerated Truck
A refrigerated truck wins when volume matters more than access. Choose a truck if most of these are true:
- Your load regularly goes past 3 tons. Splitting it across vans means extra trips or extra vehicles.
- You deliver in bulk — to distribution centres, wholesale customers or supermarket stores.
- Your drops are fewer but bigger. A truck pays off when each stop takes a large share of the load.
- You move full loads between emirates, such as Dubai to Abu Dhabi. One truck run replaces several van runs.
- You carry bulk frozen stock. A freezer truck holds −18°C to −25°C across the whole 3–5 ton load.
In Dubai, compare our chiller truck rental (0°C to +8°C) and freezer truck rental (−18°C to −25°C). In the capital, our Mussafah branch runs chiller trucks in Abu Dhabi and freezer trucks in Abu Dhabi, with delivery across the emirate including Al Ain.
One Truck or Two Vans?
Two vans and one truck cost about the same, so the right choice depends on how your load is split, not on price.
| Option | Capacity | Daily (AED) | Monthly (AED) | Routes at once |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One chiller van | 1–3 ton | 250–400 | 3,000–4,000 | 1 |
| Two chiller vans | 2–6 ton combined | 500–800 | 6,000–8,000 | 2 |
| One refrigerated truck | 3–5 ton | 500–650 | 6,500–8,500 | 1 |
- Go with two vans when your load splits into two separate routes or areas, or when your stops have tight access. You cover twice the ground at the same time.
- Go with one truck when the whole load goes to one place, or to a few large drops on the same route. One run, one loading, one vehicle to manage.
Two vans on a with-driver plan also means two drivers, so ask for the combined quote before you decide. Booking for a whole season? Monthly plans give the lowest cost per day — see monthly vs daily chiller van rental.
Quick Decision Checklist
Answer these six questions and the choice usually makes itself.
- How much do you move in a day? Up to 3 tons points to a van; regularly more than 3 tons points to a truck.
- How many stops do you make? Many small drops suit a van; a few big drops suit a truck.
- What is the access like at your stops? Narrow streets, car parks and small loading bays favour a van.
- Is your cargo chilled or frozen? Both vans and trucks come in chiller (0°C to +8°C) and freezer (−18°C to −25°C) versions, so temperature doesn’t decide the size.
- Is your demand steady or seasonal? A seasonal peak can be covered by adding a van for the busy months instead of moving up to a truck all year. Caterers planning the winter season can read our guide to refrigerated van rental for events and catering.
- Who will drive? Every van and truck is available with a driver or self-drive. Compare the two in chiller van with driver vs self-drive.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a chiller van and a refrigerated truck?
The main difference is size. A chiller van carries 1–3 tons and suits city routes with many stops; a refrigerated truck carries 3–5 tons and suits bulk and wholesale loads. Both come chilled (0°C to +8°C) or frozen (−18°C to −25°C).
How much does a refrigerated truck cost compared with a chiller van?
A chiller van costs AED 250–400 a day, AED 1,300–1,500 a week or AED 3,000–4,000 a month. A refrigerated truck costs AED 500–650 a day or AED 6,500–8,500 a month, and weekly truck hire is quoted per job.
Is it cheaper to rent two vans or one truck?
They cost about the same: two vans run AED 500–800 a day and one truck AED 500–650. Choose two vans when your load splits into two routes, and one truck when it goes to one place or a few large drops.
Can I rent a refrigerated truck for just one day?
Yes. Trucks are available on daily plans from AED 500 a day, as well as weekly and monthly plans, with a driver or self-drive.
Do you deliver vans and trucks outside Dubai?
Yes. We serve all seven emirates, 24/7. Our Abu Dhabi branch in Mussafah delivers across the emirate, including Al Ain.
