Refrigerated Transportation in the UAE: The Complete Guide to Chiller & Freezer Vehicle Rental
Every day across the UAE, thousands of deliveries depend on one thing staying constant: temperature. Fresh produce heading to supermarkets, dairy to cafes, vaccines to pharmacies, ice cream to hotels — all of it moves through a cold chain, and any weak link along the way can spoil the entire load.
This guide explains how refrigerated transportation works in the UAE, what vehicles are available, how to choose the right one, and what to expect when you rent — all in one place.
What Is Refrigerated (Cold Chain) Transportation?
Refrigerated transportation — often called cold chain transportation — is the movement of perishable goods in temperature-controlled vehicles so they stay within a safe range from origin to destination. The wider cold chain covers storage, loading, transit and handover; refrigerated transport is the moving part of it: the chiller or freezer vehicle that carries the goods between each stop.
In most countries, a short lapse is survivable. In the UAE, where summer air can reach 45–50°C, it isn’t. The gap between a freezer van’s interior and the outside air can exceed 60°C, which is why refrigerated transport here demands reliable equipment, disciplined loading, and a provider that treats every delivery as time-critical.
Chilled or Frozen? The First Decision
Before anything else, know which temperature your cargo needs — this decides the vehicle type.
- Chilled (0°C to +8°C) — fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy, chilled meat and poultry, beverages, flowers, bakery items, pharmaceuticals. These would be damaged by freezing, so they travel in a chiller van or chiller truck.
- Frozen (−18°C to −25°C) — ice cream, frozen meat, seafood, frozen ready meals, anything labelled “keep frozen”. These must never thaw, so they travel in a freezer van or freezer truck.
If you’re not sure which applies to your goods, our chiller van vs freezer van guide walks through it with examples.
The Refrigerated Vehicles Available in the UAE
Refrigerated vehicles come in two families — vans for city work and moderate loads, trucks for bulk and pallets — and each is available in chilled or frozen configurations.
Refrigerated vans (1-ton to 3-ton)
- Chiller van — 0°C to +8°C. The everyday workhorse for restaurants, cafes, pharmacies, florists and daily fresh deliveries.
- Freezer van — −18°C to −25°C. For ice cream, frozen food and seafood distribution around the city.
- High roof van — available in both chiller and freezer builds, with extra vertical space for tall or bulky cargo like bakery racks and floral displays.
Refrigerated trucks (3-ton and 5-ton)
- Chiller truck — 0°C to +8°C at pallet scale. For wholesale supply, supermarket and hypermarket restocking, and bulk chilled distribution.
- Freezer truck — −18°C to −25°C in bulk. For frozen meat, seafood and ice cream distribution, and long-haul frozen routes across the emirates.
Choosing the Right Size
Too small and you’re making extra trips; too large and you’re paying for empty space. As a quick rule: light daily drops suit a 1–1.5 ton van, supermarket and catering supply suits a 2.5–3 ton van, and anything involving pallets or wholesale volumes calls for a 3–5 ton truck. Our refrigerated vehicle size guide matches each load type to the right vehicle in more detail.
With Driver or Self-Drive?
Refrigerated vehicles in the UAE are typically available two ways:
- With driver — a turn-key service. An experienced driver who knows the routes handles the vehicle; you focus on the cargo. Ideal if you don’t have your own drivers or want to avoid the logistics.
- Self-drive — your own team operates the vehicle. Often more economical if you already have trained drivers and regular routes.
Both options work on the same rental plans, so the choice comes down to your operation, not the vehicle.
Daily, Weekly or Monthly?
Rental duration is the biggest lever on cost after vehicle size. Daily rental suits one-off jobs; weekly suits projects and seasonal peaks; monthly is the most cost-effective per day for ongoing operations that need a dedicated vehicle. Keeping Cargo Cold in the UAE Summer
The UAE summer is the real test of any cold chain. Pre-cooling the vehicle before loading, keeping door-open time to a minimum, leaving room for airflow instead of overpacking, and planning routes to cut transit time all make the difference between cargo arriving perfect and arriving spoiled. We cover each of these in our cold chain best practices for the UAE summer.
What to Have Ready When You Book
Getting an accurate quote takes minutes if you can share:
- Cargo type — chilled or frozen, and what exactly (helps set the right temperature)
- Volume — roughly how much per trip (decides van vs truck and size)
- Dates and duration — one day, a week, or ongoing
- Routes — pickup and delivery locations, and how many stops
- Driver preference — with driver or self-drive
With those five details, a good provider can confirm availability and give you a transparent, all-in price straight away.
